Who Should Get the Third Dose COVID-19 Vaccine & the Booster?

After completing the primary series, some moderately or severely immunocompromised people should get an additional, third primary shot.

Everyone 12 years and older, including immunocompromised people, should get a booster shot. If you are eligible for an additional primary shot, you should get this dose first before you get a booster shot.

Allergy/Immunology Associates, Inc. recommends that the following patients get the third dose of the COVID-19 vaccine:

1. All patients receiving gammaglobulin infusions for primary immunodeficiency.
2. All patients receiving IM GammaSTAN intramuscularly for primary immunodeficiency.
3. All patients on prophylactic antibiotics for immunodeficiency.
4. If you have an autoimmune disorder or other immunologic problem, please check with your managing physician (i.e. rheumatologist, pulmonologist, etc.) about whether you should consider getting the third COVID-19 vaccine dose.

When Should You Get the Additional Primary Shot & the Booster?

If you received the Pfizer-BioNTech or Moderna vaccine, the additional third primary dose should be given 28 days after the 2nd shot. No additional primary shot is recommended at this time for the Johnson & Johnson Janssen vaccine.

If you received the Pfizer-BioNTech or Moderna vaccine, the booster shot should be given 5 months after the additional shot. If you received the Johnson & Johnson Janssen vaccine, the booster shot should be given 28 days after the 1st shot.
